Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS)

Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS) is a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing free, high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals and families across 33 counties in southern Minnesota, including the St. Paul metropolitan area. Established in 1909, SMRLS is Minnesota's oldest legal aid program, offering a comprehensive range of civil legal services to help clients secure and protect their basic needs, such as housing, income, health, safety, and shelter. The organization is committed to promoting diversity and racial equality, serving clients from various backgrounds, and has adopted a Racial Justice policy to guide its work towards racial equality. SMRLS operates with a client-centered approach, ensuring that each client receives respectful and compassionate assistance tailored to their individual circumstances. The organization is funded through federal, state, local, public, and private sources, enabling it to serve approximately 10,000 eligible individuals each year, with hundreds of volunteer attorneys contributing to its mission. SMRLS's service areas include the 33 counties of southern Minnesota, the East and South Metropolitan Area, and agricultural workers throughout Minnesota and North Dakota.
